A woman got more than she bargained for when she threw a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome and made a wish, as she then opened her eyes to find her boyfriend had gotten down on one knee her dream proposal.
They say you should never let people know what you wish for, but 23-year-old Mikayla from Long Island, New York, said, “It’s safe to say that the fountain worked fast.”
The moment was captured on video by Mikalya’s mom and friend as her boyfriend, Giovanni, 24, got down on one knee and popped the question at the tourist hotspot, which is known for people making wishes of finding love.

The location was special to Mikayla, too, as she grew up coming to Italy every summer because her father was born and raised there.
It was Giovanni’s first trip to Italy, though, and he was extremely excited – especially knowing the plan he had in store.
Many tourists gather at the Fontana Di Trevi – known as the Trevi Fountain – to toss in coins and make a wish.
There’s also a correct way to throw a coin into the fountain, according to folklore, by throwing the coin over your left shoulder with your right hand.
Tossing one coin means you’ll return to Rome some day; two coins, you’ll return and fall in love; and three coins means you’ll return, find love, and marry.
Mikayla tossed one coin, given that she had a boyfriend and returns to Italy regularly, and when she opened her eyes, she and the hundreds of tourists around her couldn’t believe what was happening.
She later shared the video on TikTok, with the post receiving a series of loving responses.
Speaking of the surprise, Mikayla said: “I opened my eyes to the shock of the love of my life kneeling with the most perfect sparkly ring shining from the hot sun and crystal blue water.
“And then I saw all of Roma starting at me. I’m a performer, I love to sing and dance for an audience; however, I was not prepared for that spotlight.
“From the entire crowd of tourists to the snoopy old women on the balconies, all celebrating my happiness, chanting, ‘Say yes, say yes!’
“I tear up thinking about looking into these strangers’ eyes somehow, their excitement made me feel like I knew them personally and that they were genuinely happy for us.
“The best part about this all is that Giovanni is the opposite of me.
“He doesn’t like any ounce of attention on himself.
“So for him to create my dream proposal in front of so many people and my family meant the world. It felt like a movie!”
