A 74-year-old man has turned his entire neighborhood into a dazzling display of Christmas cheer to bring joy to his wife, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.

John Reichart, a Marine veteran from Indianola, Iowa, began decorating his home to celebrate his wife Joan’s love of the festive season after her diagnosis four years ago.

The project has since grown to include every house on their block, with neighbors and volunteers pitching in to create a winter wonderland.

Speaking to CBS News, Reichart explained his motivation: “If it wasn’t for my wife, I don’t know if I would’ve done it. But she wanted Christmas, so I’d give it to her. I’d do anything to make her happy.”

The neighborhood, now a popular attraction for visitors, sparkles with lights, ornaments, and festive decorations, wowing those who come to see the display.

One neighbor told CBS News: “I think the whole neighborhood feels very blessed to have him in this neighborhood.”

Another visitor described the scene as “moving,” adding: “That’s what Christmas is all about.”

For Reichart, the effort is a labor of love. “As long as she’s OK. And even if she would pass, I’m gonna do it in her memory as long as I can do it,” he said.

Joan, touched by the gesture, shared her appreciation: “I didn’t know what to think. But I’m glad he did it. I love him.”

In recognition of the couple’s story, the local community has set up a P.O. box to collect Christmas cards for the couple, offering a way for people near and far to share in the holiday spirit created by John.
