An animal shelter has come up with a unique way of fundraising – by creating drawings of followers’ pets in exchange for a donation. But the drawings come with a twist – they are far from perfect.
The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County in Washington launched its fifth annual ‘Poorly Drawn Pets’ event to raise much-needed funds.
The unique fundraiser, gaining popularity for its quirky approach, invites supporters to donate $30 in exchange for a hand-drawn portrait of their pet, albeit with a humorous twist – the artwork is intentionally amateurish.
The shelter hosts this event annually to support the 10,000 animals they care for each year.
Ashley Taulbee, the shelter’s chief philanthropy officer, emphasized the event’s dual purpose of providing funds for animal care and offering a memorable experience for pet owners.
She said: “Our artists don’t promise perfection, but they guarantee unique portraits that leave a lasting impression. Last year, we created over 1,500 masterpieces.
“This fifth-annual event promises even more, with the most hilarious masterpieces yet!”

The fundraiser has a goal of $25,000, which is fast being approached.
Any donations will support various humane programs throughout the county. Last year, the event led to the creation of over 1,500 ‘masterpieces.’
The fundraiser also serves as a platform for community engagement, with volunteers responding with their art directly from their Facebook pages.
The results range from cats and dogs in whimsical poses to more abstract artworks, all shared on the shelter’s Facebook page.
