A man got down on one knee to propose to his partner as she was wheeled out of intensive care having beaten COVID-19.

Lionel ‘Geno’ Crenshaw had planned to renew his vows with his wife Rheamie Crenshaw this coming October, but in March during the onset of the pandemic she was diagnosed with the illness.

And after taking a turn for the worse, she ended up in intensive care where doctors desperately battled to save her life.

While in the ICU on the isolation floor, Rheamie was given two experimental drugs being used to combat the effects of COVID in a bid to fight off the respiratory illness.

But they inadvertently caused her heart to enter ventricular tachycardia – a fast abnormal heart rate – which almost sent her into cardiac arrest.

A desperate Geno was trapped at home waiting on news of his wife’s condition and only able to communicate with her through video calls when she felt well enough.

It was during this period he decided to propose to renew their vows the moment she was released from hospital.

So, after seven days battling the illness, Rheamie was given the all clear – and Geno immediately headed down to Beaumont Hospital in Dearmont, Michigan.

A video recorded of the moment Geno and Rheamie reunite shows Geno flashing the ring at the camera, before turning and approaching his wife as she is wheeled out of ICU by a nurse.

As Geno approaches, he drops to one knee, with a shocked Rheamie holding her head in her hands in shock, while tears stream down her face.

The pair then embrace before Geno places the ring on his wife’s hand and she says ‘Yes’.

The emotional reunion was the first time they had seen each other in person since Rheamie was admitted to hospital.

Rheamie, who had previously recovered from kidney cancer ten years ago, which placed in the high-risk category, said: “When I was wheeled down on my discharge day I was so excited when I saw the car – I though Geno was outside, then suddenly I saw him in front of my inside the building.

“I squealed to the nurse pushing my wheelchair ‘There he is!’ – I was so excited.

“As the nurse pushed me towards Geno, the sliding doors opened, which distracted me and when I turned back, Geno was in front of me on his knee proposing again.

“I just burst out in tears with surprise and happiness all at the same time.”

Geno added: “We had planned to renew our vows in October this year, then COVID hit and changed everything.

“I decided I didn’t want to wait until October, so when she called me to say she was going to be released and was coming home I knew I had to ask her to marry me again right when I saw her in person again.”
