A woman came up with an ingenious way to break her pregnancy news to her mom, by saying she wanted to start a new pajama party family tradition, only to arrive in “Mommy” pajamas.
Chelsea Martinus, 31, from Greensboro, North Carolina, is her mom Melissa’s only child, so the pair share an incredibly close bond.
When Chelsea and her husband Shakimo, 30, discovered Chelsea was pregnant, they couldn’t wait to tell the family – so they thought of a creative way to break the news.
The couple settled on a Christmas Eve Pajama Party, which they framed as being a wholesome way to start a new family tradition.
While other family members were selecting their pajamas during the days before, Chelsea and Shakimo secretly ordered a pair that read “Mommy” and “Daddy” on the front.
Then, on the day of the surprise itself, Chelsea and Shakimo walked into 57-year-old Melissa’s kitchen, where the unsuspecting mom was wearing her own “Feelin’ Jolly” pajamas.
As soon as Melissa read the front of her daughter and son-in-law’s outfits, she immediately froze in shock, before letting out scream after scream, unable to control herself.
The moment took place on Christmas Eve 2023, but Chelsea shared it on social media a year later, where it quickly received a viral response.
Since the surprise, the couple have welcomed a baby girl, who was born in June 2024.

Speaking of the announcement, Chelsea said: “My mom and I had been setting up for the party all morning and once everyone started coming in my husband slipped to our bedroom to change into our pajamas.
“We slowly came out of our room, walked through the living room to the kitchen where my mom was still setting up.
“When my husband and I stood in the kitchen waiting for her to see our shirts, it took her a while to notice.
“She thought it was her time to put on a show for the cameras.
“But once she noticed, she screamed for literally a minute then showered us with love and tears and hugs.
“I felt like this was the moment both of us had been waiting for.
“I am her only child and we’ve always had a close bond.
“In the video she says, ‘I knew it! I felt it!’ because she’d called me the week prior out of the blue telling me she had a feeling that I was pregnant.
“I lied because we already had the surprise planned but that’s an example of how close we are.
“So being pregnant and being able to share it with her in joy felt amazing.
“It was an amazing way to start my pregnancy.”
