A proud bride planned a beautiful surprise for her sister by presenting her with her cap and gown after her Ph.D. graduation fell on the same day as her wedding.

When Isabella Cavallo, 25, from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, started planning her wedding date in 2025, she and her family had non known conflicts, as her sister, Sarah, 29, had mentioned that her graduation would likely be the following weekend.

Isabella and Sarah are extremely close, having lived together while earning their bachelor’s degrees at the University of Southern Mississippi, before Isbaella supported her sister as she continued to work towards her master’s and then her Ph.D. in Polymer and Fiber Engineering from Auburn University.

But when Sarah received the news that her graduation would be the same weekend as her sister’s wedding, her family suggested that she still order her cap and gown so that she could walk in the following graduating semester, allowing her to still get photos.

Knowing her sister would be sacrificing one celebration for another, though, Isabella decided she wanted to plan a special surprise on the wedding day itself.

On May 2, at The Barn at Bridlewood in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Isabella first surprised Sarah by hanging her sister’s graduation gown next to her wedding dress for a special series of photos.

And then, during the speeches, Isabella called her sister forward, saying she wanted to recognize her sibling’s incredible and inspiring achievement.

Isabella, her husband Cole and their family then dressed Sarah in her cap, gown and stole, so that a beaming Sarah could get the recognition she deserved in front of friends and family.

Isabella, who shared a video of the moment on social media, said: “Before the ceremony, we surprised her by hanging her graduation gown next to my wedding dress.

“We took special photos together in our gowns, creating memories that I will always treasure.

“While that surprise was meaningful, she had no idea that we also planned to recognize her in front of all of our family and friends during the reception.

“Standing there and celebrating her achievements was one of my favorite moments of the day.

“I felt incredibly proud of everything she had accomplished and the determination she showed in earning her doctoral degree.

“It was clear how much the recognition meant to her, and I know she appreciated us taking time during our wedding to honor such an important milestone in her life.

“Many family members and friends commented on how much they loved that I included my sister in our wedding day and how selfless they thought the gesture was.

“To me, however, it was an easy decision.

“I wanted everyone there to know how proud I am of my sister and all that she has achieved.

“Earning a Ph.D. is an extraordinary accomplishment, and if someone you love reaches that milestone, how could you not want to celebrate and brag about them a little?”
