A Vietnam veteran mom screamed and jumped into her soldier son’s arms when he returned from deployment to surprise her after two years away from home.
Emanuel Minor, a staff sergeant with the United States Army, from Chicago, Illinois, wanted to follow in his mom Laura’s footsteps, after she served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.
Emanuel, 27, had completed multiple tours and hadn’t been home in two years – but when he discovered that he would be home on his mom’s 71st birthday, knew he wanted to surprise her.
Having returned home in early 2026, Emanuel initially planned to surprise his mom at her home, only to discover she had already headed out for a birthday meal at a local Cracker Barrel.
The 27-year-old then drove over to the restaurant, where he coordinated with staff, so he could walk out when his mom’s food arrived.
As the moment played out, Laura let out a huge scream as soon as she saw her son, rising to her feet before jumping into his arms, her feet off the ground.
Emanuel said he’d never seen his mom express so much excitement or emotion towards something before, and he wanted to make the moment extra special because she raised him as a single mom and was the inspiration behind his military career.
He said: “The bond I share with my mother is quite special, as I am her youngest child, and she raised me as a single mother all on her own – in addition to the fact she was the main motivator behind my wanting to join the military and serve the country.
“Upon arriving back home, I initially tried to surprise her at her house; however, she had already left to celebrate her birthday elsewhere.
“From there I had to speed over to Cracker Barrel and coordinate with the restaurant to escort me through the back so I could walk out when they brought her food.
“The rest of the moment and everything after was pure joy and bliss, with her jumping into my arms and me catching her, thankfully.
“Tears were shed as she swung her feet in my arms, a truly special moment where my heart felt full and I listened to the applause of the other people around me.
“I’ve never seen my mother express that much emotion towards anything before, so in the moment when she jumped into my arms, I truly felt like a little kid again.
“It was truly a special moment for both of us, which I will never forget.
“I hope to convey from this moment to cherish every moment with your loved ones and call your troops.
“Oftentimes we forget the most important people in our lives are the ones we forget to cherish the most.
“Even a simple phone call to your parents, or your soldier overseas is enough to brighten their whole day and let them know you love them.”
