A grandma who had joked that she would have liked some “eye candy” for her 92nd birthday got quite a surprise when a group of local firemen showed up at her house.

Just days before Berna Dean Pierce’s big day, the 92-year-old had accidentally triggered her life alert, causing the local Wichita Fire Department to come rushing to her door, only to discover Berna Dean was completely fine.

On July 20, that incident led Berna Dean to profess to family members how big and strong the firefighters had looked, joking that she hadn’t gotten a chance to look at the firefighters’ faces because she was so focused on their muscles.

And so, for her birthday party two days later, Berna Dean’s family decided to try and include their local fire department in the big surprise.

The department said they couldn’t commit to visiting the house because they had a charity event, but when one of Berna Dean’s family members spotted a fire fighter carrying out such charity work in town while collecting her cake, she asked if they could swing by for a quick visit at any point during the day.

Within 30 minutes, a group of firefighters pulled up outside Berna Dean’s house, bringing the 92-year-old to swiftly apply some lipstick.

They then entered the home on July 22, where they wished Berna Dean a Happy Birthday and even sang to her.

The surprise was captured on video by Berna Dean’s granddaughter, Kaycee Cook, 28, who later shared the video on social media.

Her family paid a visit to the fire department in the days after the surprise, gifting those who had helped out with cupcakes.

Speaking of the surprise, Kaycee said: “My grandmother kept repeating – and still keeps repeating – that this was the surprise of her life and she still can’t believe it.

“She was so giddy and excited she couldn’t even eat her favorite meal, saying, ‘I could go all day without eating after that excitement.’

“She was so thrilled that I caught it on video because she wanted to make sure I sent it to our family members to show them her amazing birthday surprise.

“I can’t even begin to describe how happy I felt standing back watching my grandma’s shy reactions.

“It was amazing the see the pure joy in her expression; they made her feel so special.

“She hasn’t had too many opportunities for excitement this past year due to health issues, so that small gestures meant more to us than those four firemen could have ever imagined.

“You could tell I was just as excited for her.

“I was shaking the whole time, laughing awkwardly and tripping over my words.

“I absolutely love my grandmother; I’ve always been a Grandma’s Girl.

“For me to have the opportunity to get to witness one of the best moments of her life was absolutely magical.”
