A husband who thought he was about to lose his job was left stunned when the “layoff letter” in his hands turned out to be a cleverly disguised pregnancy announcement.
Matt Reed, 34, of Akron, Ohio, had asked his wife, Heather, 31, to surprise him if she found out she was pregnant with their fourth child.
Their first three pregnancies had not come as a surprise to Matt, and because the couple were actively trying for another baby, Heather knew she would need to get creative if she wanted to catch him off guard.
So she turned to the one place Matt would never expect to receive family news: his workplace.

Heather drafted a fake letter filled with corporate language, appearing to tell Matt he would be laid off around the time of her due date because he would soon be “stretched thin as a father of 4.”
After discovering she was pregnant, Heather planned for Matt to open the mail as soon as they picked it up, something he usually does in the family’s car.
But the reveal did not go quite as smoothly as she imagined.
The couple were running late for an anniversary meal when Matt skimmed the letter and was immediately convinced by the “corporate jargon” Heather had added to make it look legitimate.
Rather than spotting the surprise, Matt brought the letter into the restaurant, where he read it more carefully at the table – and began to panic.
Still fearing his job was on the line, Matt failed to notice the pregnancy reveal hidden in the wording. Heather then pretended to read through the letter herself, reassuring him as the truth sat right in front of him.
When Matt finally realized what the letter really meant, panic gave way to joy – and relief.
Heather said the couple laughed about the moment for days afterward.
They have since welcomed their fourth son, Judah, who was born on March 27.

Heather said: “I knew it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if it came from me directly, because he was already anticipating a yes or a no as we were trying.
“I realized I could fake a letter from his work – but why would work send him a letter?
“It had to be something attention-grabbing, so I decided to fake laying him off during ‘Q1 of 2026,’ the due date, as he’ll soon be ‘stretched thin as a father of 4.’
“Things did not go exactly as planned.
“My friends and family that know us well absolutely loved it.
“While job loss itself is definitely no joke, I knew my husband and our sense of humor well enough to know if it was appropriate or not.
“Turns out I was right, that kind of adrenaline rush is exactly what he wanted.
“It has become a core memory of ours that we still laugh about.”
