A bride left her pilot groom beaming at the altar when she revealed his wedding ring had been made from part of a retired Southwest plane – one that left service the same month he joined the airline.
Malaika and Djimon Green first crossed paths in May 2023, when Malaika, a United Airlines flight attendant, met Djimon, a Southwest pilot, at a hotel bar while on a layover.
The pair immediately hit it off, and Malaika, 27, from Phoenix, Arizona, soon learned just how deep Djimon’s love of flying ran.
Djimon, 28, took his first plane trip at the age of six, began pilot training while still in high school, earned his pilot’s license at just 17, and became a Southwest pilot at 24.

Since then, he has also volunteered with multiple flying organizations and mentor programs.
So when the couple began planning their wedding, Malaika knew she wanted to find a way to bring Djimon’s passion for aviation into the ceremony – and especially into the ring she would place on his finger.
After discovering crafters who make jewelry from scrap metal, Malaika found an Etsy seller and commissioned a ring made from the titanium fan blade of a Southwest plane that was retired in June 2022 – the same month Djimon was hired by the airline.
At the couple’s wedding ceremony in Mesa, Arizona, Malaika finally revealed the secret during the ring exchange.
As Djimon listened to the story behind the deeply personal gift, his face immediately lit up in a moving moment captured by the couple’s wedding videographer, Iliana Eggert, of Behind the Veil AZ.
Malaika later shared the clip on social media, where it quickly went viral, with viewers saying the thoughtful gesture showed she simply “gets” her husband.
She said: “I surprised Djimon with the ring during our ring exchange at our wedding ceremony.
“He had no idea.
“I felt so excited and ecstatic to see how his face lit up when I shared the special details about his ring.

“It warmed my heart knowing how special he thought the ring was and that it had a deeper meaning.
“We have received so many kind words from family, friends, and social media.
“So many people have reached out to me asking about the ring so that they could do it for their fiancé, or even people that were inspired to put a personal touch into the ring for their partners.
I hope our story reminds people to always celebrate the people that they love and to remember that even the smallest details matter so much.”
