A proud stepdad broke down in tears when his teenage stepson revealed he had secretly filed to take his last name – then announced it as he crossed the stage at graduation.
Johnny Palmer, from Pocahontas, Arkansas, had no idea his stepson, Nathaniel “Nate,” had been working to legally change his surname, let alone that he planned to reveal the news during one of the biggest moments of his life.
Johnny came into Nate’s life at a difficult time for the youngster and his mom, Andrea, after Nate’s biological father left without explanation, Andrea said.
From the moment Johnny was introduced to Nate, when Nate was two, he stepped up to become the father figure he needed, Andrea added.

At the time, Andrea was finishing her bachelor’s degree in education, and Johnny did not hesitate to help when she struggled to find babysitters, often bringing Nate along to work with his construction business.
There, Johnny would make makeshift tools for young Nate, helping him feel included while he worked.
Over the years that followed, Johnny remained a constant pillar of stability for Nate and Andrea, including when Nate went through difficulties with his hips that required surgery.
So, ahead of his graduation, Nate told his mom he wanted to change his last name to Palmer as a way of honoring Johnny for being the father figure he had always needed.
Andrea and Nate kept the plan a secret from Johnny, filling out the necessary court paperwork ahead of the name change becoming official in July.
The teenager then decided there was no better moment to reveal the surprise than his graduation on May 1 at Maynard High School, a small school with around 40 graduates.
As Nate crossed the stage, Andrea proudly recorded her son’s achievement – while others in the gym had their cameras trained on Johnny.
The moment Johnny heard his stepson’s new surname announced, his face turned red and tears of happiness formed in his eyes, with the emotional reaction captured on video.
Andrea, who shared the footage on social media, said: “Over the years, a lot of things have happened that we could not have survived without Johnny
“Nate approached me several months ago about changing his name to Palmer before graduation and wanted to keep it under wraps.
“I assisted him with all the court documents and helped him fill it all out, and almost everybody at the school knew what was going to happen.

“I had several people helping me by recording his reaction while I still could film my son as he walked.
“I wanted both reactions documented.
“Johnny at first was confused and then I turned around and told him that his name change will be official by July.
“Then it all sank in, and you can see him give the thumbs up and his face starts getting red. The real reaction really started after the first recording.
“That’s when my friend Amanda restarted the video across the gym when he started crying and wiping his eyes.
“You can see all the others around him, teary-eyed and wiping their eyes as well.
“Nate just grinned from ear to ear as he looked up at Johnny in the stands.
“Johnny is genuinely the sweetest guy and would do anything for anybody.”
