A woman who received a liver transplant as a toddler is about to marry the younger brother of the boy who saved her life, 23 years after his family said yes to donation.
Brooklyn Dotson was 18 months old in 2003 when a rare liver condition left her days from death without a transplant.
A donor liver became available just in time. It came from Michael Waters, a 10-year-old boy from Dayton, Ohio, who had been struck by a car on Dec. 29, 2003.
Michael had told his family years earlier that he wanted to be an organ donor if anything ever happened to him, and his parents honored the wish. His organs went to several people, and Brooklyn’s transplant was carried out at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital the following day.
“I get to enjoy life because of him and I get to live and hopefully honor his memory the best way that I can,” Brooklyn told LEX 18.
The two families met in person in 2005 and kept in touch as the children grew up.
Brooklyn became friends with Michael’s younger brother, Noah, who was there through the hard stretches, including another surgery she needed as a teenager. They both knew something extraordinary connected them, and neither of them saw where it was heading.
Then, in 2025, Noah drove from Ohio to Kentucky to tell Brooklyn he had always had feelings for her, and by Christmas Eve he had asked her to marry him.
She said yes, and the couple marry on Sept. 26.
“I’d say he probably knew what his purpose was,” Noah said of his brother. “I had no idea that my brother was gonna save my wife’s life 20 years later.”
