This Veterans Day a dream was transformed into a reality with the groundbreaking of Freedom Hill, a purpose-built community for our nation’s veterans and first responders.
In an incredible display of partnership, Building Homes for Heroes, Lowe’s, and the Town of Mooresville, in North Carolina, joined forces to launch this life-changing project which is much more than just a housing development – it’s a village of hope, security, and promise.
A Promise Kept
Freedom Hill is set to accommodate up to 15 homes, providing future residents with the stability they’ve earned through their service and sacrifice.
Summing up the mission, Andy Pujol, Founder and CEO of Building Homes for Heroes, said: “This village embodies what our mission has always been about: restoring hope, stability, and independence for our nation’s heroes.”
His organization is going the extra mile beyond mortgage-free homes, by providing comprehensive support to residents, including crucial financial guidance and physical/mental health resources. They are on a mission to deliver 50 homes in 2025 and reach their milestone 500th home soon after.
A True Partnership
This project is a powerful blueprint for how communities can support their heroes:
- The Town of Mooresville donated the land.
- Lowe’s and its generous customers helped fund the initiative via Lowe’s Round-Up for Charity.
- Building Homes for Heroes brings its deep understanding and commitment to supporting veterans.
Lowe’s EVP of Stores, and a Gulf War Veteran himself, added: “Serving those who served is deeply engrained in who we are at Lowe’s. Freedom Hill will not only continue that legacy, but provide a blueprint for communities nationwide.”
The groundbreaking builds on Lowe’s commitment to deliver 10 million square feet of impact this year, including work to renovate homes for veterans and restore community spaces for the military community to gather.
Mooresville Mayor Chris Carney concluded this community will be a “generational tribute” to the courage and selflessness of our heroes.
A Celebration to Remember
The path to this groundbreaking was a 14-month journey of collaboration. The Veterans Day ceremony was a huge success, culminating in former Special Forces parachutists descending onto the future site.
This community model is the first of its kind for Building Homes for Heroes, and with the turning of the first ground, leaders have ushered in a watershed moment for safe, stable homes and an evolution in how we honor our nation’s greatest heroes.
