Woman Given 0.1 Percent Chance Of Getting Pregnant After Bone Marrow Transplant Surprised With News

A woman who underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant that gave her a "0.1 percent" chance of conceiving naturally cried when she discovered she was five-months pregnant with her miracle baby. Over the previous two years, McKindree Patton Wilson and her husband, Hyrum, had navigated the prospect of IVF through countless appointments, tests and conversations about what the future could hold. In 2014, when McKindree, from San Tan Valley, Arizona, was 16, she underwent a lifesaving bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with a rare genetic bone marrow failure called Diamond Blackfan Anemia. The disease prevents the body from producing red blood cells properly, and, at the time, a bone marrow transplant was the only known cure. Though the treatment ultimately saved McKindree's life, the teenager was left infertile by chemotherapy. Multiple doctors said McKindree’s chances of conceiving naturally were less than 0.1 percent, and before her transplant, she had frozen her eggs. After marrying Hyrum in 2020, the couple's discussions later turned to parenthood, as they knew they wanted a family but also understood the road would likely involve IVF. Having made the decision to move forward with IVF in January of this year, the couple later signed consent forms to begin fertilizing their frozen eggs. But not long after signing the forms, McKindree headed to the doctor because she felt like she was constipated and worried it could be a problem linked to her medical history. The doctor advised her to take a pregnancy test when she got home – and despite seeing numerous positive results on various tests, McKindree, given the chances she had been given, said she still didn't think they were correct.
