A Maryland woman’s car troubles led to a happy surprise last month when she discovered she had won a $953,280 lottery jackpot while waiting for her vehicle to be repaired.
The lucky winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous but calls herself “Silver Dove,” bought a $20 Fast Play Extreme Green ticket at a Shell gas station in Woodlawn, Maryland. While her car was being serviced at an auto shop in Windsor Mill, she decided to check the ticket on her phone.
“I scanned it on the lottery app, and it just kept saying, ‘Scan ticket again,'” a jubilant Silver Dove told lottery officials. “I scanned it like three or four times, and then it finally said, ‘Congratulations, you won!’ I was just like, ‘Oh my God!'”
Despite the life-changing news, Silver Dove managed to keep her composure until she was back on the road.
“I remained calm the whole time,” she said in a statement. “I started to scream and thanked my mom in heaven.”
The windfall comes at a perfect time for Silver Dove, a computer analyst who was already planning to retire.
“I am happy that it came to me at this time,” she said. “I can definitely fast-track my retirement now.”
Silver Dove plans to use some of her winnings to pay off debts and invest for the future. She also intends to share some of her good fortune with her family and friends.
“I’m going to help out my family, my grandkids, and maybe take a nice vacation,” she said.
This wasn’t Silver Dove’s first lottery win. She previously won $12,000 in the Maryland Lottery’s Racetrax game in August.
“I guess I’m just lucky,” she laughed.
And it’s not just the winner who got lucky – the business that sold the jackpot-winning ticket also receives a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
